PVD Plating Explained

PVD plating is a modern coating process that bonds a layer of real 18k gold to the metal at a molecular level, creating a finish that is up to 10 times thicker and more durable than traditional gold plating.

What is PVD plating? PVD stands for Physical Vapor Deposition. Unlike traditional gold plating where jewellery is dipped in a liquid bath, PVD is a high-tech process performed in a vacuum chamber. The gold is vaporised and bonded to the base metal (usually stainless steel) at a molecular level, creating an incredibly hard and durable finish.

Is PVD jewellery really waterproof? Yes. Because the gold is bonded so tightly to the metal, moisture cannot get underneath the layer to cause peeling or flaking. You can safely wear PVD-plated pieces in the shower, at the gym, or while swimming without worrying about them turning your skin green or losing their lustre.

How long does the plating last? PVD plating is roughly 10 times thicker and much harder than standard gold plating.
